In memoriam · May 2026
Tim Grady, 1942–2026
On Tuesday 19 May 2026 our Lightning community, and in particular the Classic Lightning community, lost a long-time member: Tim Grady, of Titusville, Florida.
Tim built his own wooden Lightning, Peregrine, #15477 — a light blue boat with a peregrine falcon on the spinnaker, set up to daysail comfortably and still race. It was the most recent home build granted an official measurement certificate by the Lightning Chief Measurer, and his rigging diagrams are still passed around as a guide for setting up a boat.
He sailed Peregrine on Lake Monroe, was active in LMSA and was always eager to help at the club. The small-scale Lightning baby cradle and the custom Lightning corn hole boards were his too. He is remembered for being a skilled craftsman, a good friend, and for smiling a great deal.
Peregrine is now cared for by a member of the Keuka Lake fleet in the Finger Lakes.
